Third time lucky!

Posted on 2006.07.04 at 21:36
Again, this is a short version, the full one will be posted once I return to Israel.

Tuesday, July 4th 2006 saw the launch of Shuttle Discovery - and I saw it all :)

It was INCREDIBLE !

I was doing the astronaut training today, so I was on the roof of a building.
Farther than I would have been had it launched on Saturday, but with a better view I think, and we also had the company of an astronaut who was with us for the training.

The shuttle itself was tiny, just a little triangle on the horizon (about 15 kms away, I think)

There was an billowing cloud of white smoke in the center and then a pillar of smoke with a bright peak erupted upwards. About a minute later, as the shuttle was still rising, there was a breath of wind and a loud rumble... the ground really shook!

We saw the shuttle/bright stuff for about two minutes and then there was just the pillar of smoke (very biblical) which slowly dissipated.

Wooo hooo!

I got some nice pictures of the pillar and of the crowd and water in the foreground of the shuttle launching area, but  a friend of mine had a much longer zoom lens and we'll swap pictures when we get back. (she's from Australia)

The whole thing put a goofy smile on my face.

I had a good time at historical/quaint Cocoa village yesterday too... I think I got a bit sun burnt at the (famous?) Cocoa  Beach. It's supposed to be one of the bets in Florida, and thus in the states. It's a very nice beach, sort of what I remember Israeli beaches to be like before the buildings took over the beaches and without the black tar. Wide sandy beaches, lovely waves.
I was expecting the Atlantic to be less salty than the Mediterranean, but *shrug* I guess I was wrong.

Pictures will have to wait till I get back to Israel, because I can't connect the camera to this computer.

Washington

Posted on 2006.06.30 at 21:34
This is just a placeholder for a fuller version of my time in Washington.
I'm currently staying in a hotel with very limited Internet, so thats why I'm not updating the journal properly...

My three days is Washington D.C. coincide with the wettest and wildest weather in two hundred years!

My first day there, Monday, was so bad that The Mall (the roadway/walkway/park in the middle of the city) was closed to traffic and many of the Smithsonian Museums were closed too - I didn't expect the premier museums of the world to have flooded cellars.

So after arrving in DC I went to the Old Town Trolley Ride to get my tour of Washington. There I discovered that due to the floods, most of the stops were unavailable :(

The rest of my trip to Washington was great, and I'll tell you more about it when I get back to Israel.

Orlando - Shuttle launch tomorrow

Posted on 2006.06.30 at 20:09
Just a quick note to say I landed safely in Orlando and checked into my hotel.

Of course, I got lost on the way from the airport to the hotel ;)
Though I got a nice little car from the rental agency.

Fingers crossed for the launch tomorrow - but I'm sure I'll have a great time what ever happens - there's tons to do here in Orlando, much more than just the theme parks.

Have a good weekend/week everyone.

There's a slight problem with the hotel's Internet, so I'm not sure how often I'll be writing -

bye bye :)

New York! New York!

Posted on 2006.06.24 at 21:43
Current Location: Jade & Rami's
Current Mood: pleased
I spent three days in New York.
I had three great days.
Though New York reminds me a lot of Hong Kong - same gigantic buildings and wonderful skyline.
There's even the same hole-in-the-wall camera/electronics shops and scaffolding blocking the pavements.
However, the streets of New York are lined with gold... well, not really, but they are very nice and wide :)
Even I can't get lost in New York, with the grid-like network of streets and avenues. Though I think the best part of New York is Central Park; where one can, and I did, get lost!
I left for NY early Wednesday morning, got to the train station near Jade's place just as the train came in and then got the bus in central Philly for New York.
It dropped me off in downtown Manhattan and I descended into the subway - on my way to the first target, The Natural History Museum.
The subway is a lot smellier and stuffier than the London underground. The underground is fun, the subway is a necessity.

The Nat.Hist.Mus. has it's own subway station, you don't even have to go outside, there's a rear entrance from the subway station.
A couple of notes about the museum:
* I got lost in it. A lot. I spent a lot of my time navigating through large stone faced corridors trying to get to where I wanted to go.
* It's depressing going to a museum like this, with lots of stuffed animals, the day after being in a zoo.
* The Hayden planetarium is immense and very impressive.
* There are a lot of people walking around with Digital SLR cameras these days ;)
* The Darwin exhibition was very well done, the first half was a biography of his, more along the lines of something in a historical museum. The second half was, of course, explaining evolution.
* One of the last exhibits was a video of a number of scientists and religious figures rebutting Intelligent Design.
* The butterfly conservatory was perhaps the best part of the museum. yes, even better than the astronomy sections :)

* The sheer number and variety of the beautiful critters was incredible - and their beauty was awe inspiring.
Leaving the museum I went down Central Park a little, got lost in the "rambles" (a maze like network of paths) and headed to the center of town.
When you're in the middle of Central Park, you can forget you're in the largest metropolis in the world - you can't see the skyscrapers because of the trees and there is no sound of cars or any city like noise.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Many places in the park are "quiet" zones, where you must use earphones if you listen to musics and you can't play group ball games!
I went down the avenues, enjoyed the sights of the BIG CITY.
No need to elaborate, you've all seen them on TV ;)
Dinner at Macy's - just for the fun of it, and then headed to a friend of mine called Danny for bed.

For some reason, call me naive, I had expected to be sleeping in a spare room - not on a mattress beside his bed. I guess I don't really know what Manhattan rental prices are ;)
Anyway, I slept on a King-sized mattress - so I didn't suffer.
We talked a bit, and watched TV till I fell asleep.
The next day was a victory for laziness!
I was later than I planned getting to the Museum I wanted to go to, BUT... it also opened later than I expected it to. So if I HAD arrived on time, I would have just waited longer for it to open!
I went to the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum. It's an aircraft carried-turned-floating-museum. Very big, very impressive.

Apparently, had I come with my military ID, I would have gotten free entry!
I also had a tour of a nuclear submarine there - though the extremely rude guide hinted that he thought we were quite strange to be touring a museum while there was a World Cup game going on... and I thought I had escaped "Mondial Madness"!
After that I headed to Bryant park where I hoped to meet Moran (and old friend of mine from 15 years ago whose staying in NY for a while)
Bryant park is the one where people play chess against all comers.
Unfortunately, Moran had an unplanned appointment and even more unfortunately, my #$*&! cellphone doesn't work properly, so she couldn't contact me.
Anyway, I had a pleasant and unplanned time in the park, and then I found an Internet cafe where I found her message. I'll be seeing her in Israel instead, oh well.
After lunch, I headed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
* It's MUCH nicer getting lost here than the Nat.Hist.Mus, because there are no empty corridors, each gallery leads directly into the next.
* I got lost a lot, but found interesting things along the way.
* Of course, the later Grecian and all the Roman exhibits were closed for renovations ;)
* One of the best exhibits, from my point of view, was that of Grecian stele, which are ancient funerary markers -which I studied in one of my first university courses. It was fun to see "in real life" what I studied.

* They were much stricter than other museums about pictures...
Then I walked down all of Central park and Manhattan till I got back to Danny's.
The next day, I met Melly and we went to Liberty and Ellis Islands. The New York weather is much improved with the breeze of a ferry.
The islands were not that impressive, but It was nice seeing them.

Of course, some time was spent in bookshops...
We then headed back to Philly... Tired but satisfied.
There's a lot more to do in NY, but I'm not sure how I'd spend another hectic few days there.
I'd like to really relax in the sun in the parks for example.
It seems to me to be a better place lo live in, than just to visit...

This is just a sampling of the pictures, I guess I'll sort them all out more when I get home.

Till next time,
Robert.

Catching up

Posted on 2006.06.20 at 15:52
It's been a  few days since my last update.
They've been nice, relaxing, holidaying with family type days.
I'm saving my energy for New York and Washington.

Sunday was a lazy day. We got up late and went for a walk to Jade and Melly's local coffee shop/bar... "Where everyone knows their name". Well, Everyone knows Melly's name at least; not all of the coffee tenders knows Jade name.
Next to the coffee place is a baby shop - No, you don't buy babies there, you buy things for babies.

While Jade and Melly were choosing a new bib for Libby, Shvo and I played in the corner of the shop. Shvo found a toy knight and one of the salespeople said "I wonder how that snuck in, we don't let military things in".
I wonder what he would have thought he he know I was a "military thing"!
The other odd thing that happened there was that they have a lending-library. Jade took out a book about baby care without registering anything. There's no time limit - they just trust total strangers to come in, take books and return them. How un-American ;)

We came home and went to the pool. The water was FREEZING - I think that's where I caught my cold :(
Shvo stayed on the steps, but Melly and I had a great time splashing and throwing a ball at each other.

In the evening we went out to a restaurant; while waiting for Rami, we took Shvo to a playground and... I think we interrupted a drug deal between three shady looking people.

The next day (yesterday) Melly, Rami, Shvo, Libby and I went to the Franklin Institute - a science museum. Shvo (obviously) was most in love with the train section. There is an exhibit where you get on a real train and it moves! About a meter in each direction...
We also went to the Planetarium (Harrison Ford narrated) which was very well done. Interesting, good effects, no mumbo-jumbo.
a
Outside of the museum was the science park - which was about 20 degrees hotter than the air conditioned interior.
They had the usual gimmicks and things you have in a science park - two parabolas with which you can hear each other from afar, games with balls, a sundial, etc...
Also, a full scale model of a Lunar Module - a precursor of what I expect to see in the Air&Space museum and at Cape Canaveral.

For Supper, we had a braii - kebabs and vegetables.

Today, the boys (Rami, Shvo and myself) went to Philadelphia Zoo.
Quite a nice zoo they have too.

The animals were all affected by the heat, except for the otters ;)
A sign of America - the Ice cream comes in two sizes - medium and large... hmmmm... whats missing?

I haven't uploaded pictures yet, mostly because of lack of computer time ;)
It's not easy when there are three computer-holics under one roof.

That brings me up to dateish.
Tomorrow I'm off to New York.

First trip into Philadelphia

Posted on 2006.06.17 at 17:57
Current Mood: happy and tired
I've just come back from my first trip to Philadelphia .

It was a lot of fun. I drove myself, my two sisters and denephew and denice to the center of Philadelphia - the historical center.
Driving in America is strange. It's not strange like driving in England, where everything is on the left, but things seem a little... off.
Sort of like playing a game where the rules are slightly different to those you are familiar with, but you're not sure in what way.
I guess with a bit more experience, I'll get used to it.

I took my new camera with me. I like it. I like it a lot!
I took nearly 200 pictures over a period of about 6 hours ;)
Obviously, I'll be throwing out about 90% of them, but I like the flexibility of being able to take as many pictures as I like without caring.
As soon as I install the software of the camera on Jade and Rami's computer, I'll transfer the pictures and add a few to the journal.

Going round historical Philadelphia is like going round the Old City of Jerusalem, but with the American declaration of independence and history instead of Judaism. Every street corner has a muse am or a historical house where someone who was central to the process of building America.
The most famous son of Philadelphia is Benjamin Franklin and there are many "imitators" walking around the city.

Out side the Constitution Museum there was a storyteller who told us a charming story about American baseball and a very emotional one about a family of slaves that was separated when they escaped north and was finally reunited lat in life. Shvo and other children were captivated.
We went round the city on a tour tram and saw all the sights. Most recognizable was, of course, the Philadelphia Museum of Art where Rocky ran up the steps...

Returned home, filling up of petrol on the way - I don't know why Americans complain so much - It's not THAT expensive.
Exhausted again... I think I'll have a nap before choosing which pictures to show you.

Arrived in Philly

Posted on 2006.06.16 at 22:54
Arrived Philly...22 hours with very little sleep.

I upgraded my seat on the flight from an center seat (blech) to a window seat. Once everyone had boarded, I found to my joy that NO ONE was sitting in the center seat. Just me and the guy in the isle... Leg room :)

Flight was OK, except for the problems with the IEC (Interactive Entertainment Center). Every so often it went mute for 20 seconds and then rebooted to the first channel. Very annoying. The other problem was the lack of sleep, evidently taking off at 11am is not conducive to sleep at all.

A first at Newark airport; while waiting in line for border control, an attendant called out that a new line was forming. I left my line and joined the new one. the new line was faster than the old one! Take that, Murphy :)

The train from Newark to Philly was supposed to leave at 18:42. At 18:40, the board changed and presented the next train at 21:00.
Slight panic ensued at the platform as we tried to find out how the train had passed us silently and invisibly.
Eventually, it arrived at 18:50...

I was met at the station by Rami and Shvo and we took the (wonderful) scenic route to the apartment.
Shvo insisted that the car ride was faster than the plan - by millions and millions :)

It's quite wonderful to drive through a wild looking forest in the middle of a major city.
The place looks nothing like I'd imagined - every time I saw pictures of them in the park I had assumed that they went somewhere - not that the park was their front yard!
It reminds me of the Manor in the William stories.

The reunion with Jade and Melly was emotional to say the least :D

Had a great supper, unpacked and am falling asleep...

Leaving soon

Current Mood: excited
Well, it's 7am...

Just reading/writing last emails before taking a shower and heading for the airport.

I'm sure of two things :
* I have forgotten Something. I don't know what, hopefully nothing important.
* I have taken too many clothes ;)

I've also got about a year's supply of Israeli snack food, meant to remind my family of the wonders of Israeli cuisine.
Really, I might get thrown in jail in customs for food smuggling!

Right well...
Next time I write in this, I'll be 7 timezones away.

This is going to be the journal of my trip to the United States of America.
A few years ago, I spent a few weeks in England and kept a diary of most of what I did. Two years ago, I went to Hong Kong and kept a diary of my weeklong voyage.

Neither diary was transferred to digital form and therefore both are, most likely, lost to posterity.

Seeing as I had already opened this LiveJournal account (in order to respond to my sister's livejournal) I think I can put it to good use by writing the account of my time in the states it it.

Please note that as I assume non-family are going to be reading the at some point in time, I will be explaining a few things that may be obvious to most of the readers ;)

A few questions about the trip:
Why? Why am I going to America?
- I'm going to America to visit my second sister, Jade, and her family (my brother-in-law Rami, denephew Shvo and denice Libby). As a bonus, my younger sister Melody is also visiting them.
Of course, once I'm there... I'm going to live out a couple of lifelong dreams...

When? When am I going to America?
- I'm going to America WHILE Melody is there, AFTER the winter semester at university ends, BEFORE Jade comes to Israel for a visit in August and BEFORE my exams start in July. This leaves me about three weeks between June 16th and July 8th. As a bonus, the Space Shuttle Discovery is launching on July 1st and I will be able to see it. I'll be leaving for the airport around 8:30am BMT (Barron Mean Time) June 16th and arrive in Philly about 8pm the same day.
Return to Israel is 11am July 8th.

What? What am I going to be doing in America?
- Well, first of all, those who know me know that I like to be as flexible as possible with my decision making, (the unkind and incorrect would say that I simply don't decide) which means that I don't know quite yet.
The current plan is to spend the first weekend in Philly, go to Washington or New York during the week. No plans for the weekend of the 23rd yet. The next week will be in New York or Washington (whichever I wasn't in the previous week - Duh!). June 30th I'll take off for Kennedy Space Center. I've booked in the "Best Western Space Shuttle Inn" till the 5th and then head for Miami till the 7th, when I return to Israel.

How? How am I planning/booking/doing everything?
- Well, the Internet is amazing. I've booked the hotel, done most of my shopping and done what planning I have done all through the wonderful World Wide Web.
I'm even writing this diary entry online... something I thought I'd never be doing.

Tomorrow I've got the last day of work in the army for three weeks.
I wonder how things will have changed when I get back.

Hi Everyone.

This is just here so that the site won't be COMPLETELY empty...

I just made this user so I could post comments in other peoples journals.

:)
